Rowers Choice Launches First-Ever Global Virtual Rowing Challenge Following the Success of Erg Mania

Baltimore, MD May 1st – Rowers Choice is launching the first Global Virtual Rowing Challenge. After massive success with the 2020 Erg Mania Competition with USRowing, Rowers Choice is taking the same bracket style competition to the international stage and has increased the stakes with bigger prizes and additional categories.

The bracket style competition is a direct response to the ever-changing Covid-19 virus outbreak. Rower's Choice wanted to provide an opportunity for the rowing community to compete after it was announced that the majority of competition for the spring and early summer was to be canceled. The competition was a huge success and exceeded initial expectations.

“We were thrilled to see that over 1400 people participated in the Erg Mania in March/April. We knew that we were onto something because even after registration closed, we still had people that wanted to participate" Rower's Choice CEO Alex Del Sordo said. "With the additional age categories in the Virtual Global Rowing Challenge, we’re excited to welcome both returning and new athletes”.

The new Global Virtual Rowing Challenge is following a similar structure to the original Erg Mania but with a twist. Additional categories (U17 and Masters) have been added to the original U19 and Open categories because of overwhelming demand. While there is no cost to register (and submit a time to be seeded), competitors will be required to pay an entry fee ($100 per Junior Team and $50 for Open and Master entries) if they earn a spot in one of the two brackets per category. The teams or individuals that make it to the Final 4 will be eligible to win cash prizes. Juniors will be competing on behalf of their home team and/or club while individuals competing in the open and masters categories will be competing for individual prizes.

“Since we launched Erg Mania, our intention has been to unite the rowing community around the world," DelSordo stated. “The event is to provide athletes – not just rowers – a chance to be part in a unique competitive experience while having the opportunity to win cash prizes.”

Participants will compete in head-to-head, single elimination races. Distances will vary per round - highlighting some of rowing's most notable competitions.
